PRESS RELEASE: STARTING WITH 2021, PASSENGERS from CLUJ AVRAM IANCU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WILL BE ABLE TO TRAVEL WITH LIQUIDS IN THE HAND BAGGAGE

November 12, 2020, Cluj-Napoca – Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport is the first airport in Romania, where passengers will be able to travel from 2021, with liquids in their hand luggage.  Today, the first C3 standard security equipment for processing passengers and cabin baggage arrived at Cluj Airport, with the rest to be delivered by the end of November. The new equipment will be used for security screening starting with 2021.

The installation of this equipment will streamline the screening process and reduce passenger processing time due to the superior scanning capacity. At the same time, standard EDS C3 equipment allows cabin baggage scanning without passengers having to remove large electronics, liquids, aerosols, from hand luggage. The equipment will be equipped with an automatic integrated tray return system.

The objective of the project is to achieve an integrated cabin baggage security control system of the highest standard established by the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) for the detection of prohibited items in passenger luggage.

The equipment was purchased within the Project “Standard Hand Baggage Scanning Equipment C3 with Integrated Automatic Tray Management/Return System” – SMIS Code2014+ 120737, co-financed from the European Regional Development Fund through the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme 2014 – 2020.  The total value of the financing contract is 29.641.623,44 lei of which 98% represents European funds and 2% is the contribution of Cluj Airport.

“Although, due to this global crisis, passenger traffic has decreased greatly and is due to a difficult period until 2021, Cluj International Airport continues to develop and invest, and the implementation of this security equipment offers a special advantage for passengers. The fact that we are the first airport in Romania and among the first in Europe where passengers can travel with liquids in hand luggage, shows our continuing concern for people from Cluj-Napoca and passengers” said David Ciceo, Managing Director of Cluj International Airport.

Viorel Federiga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cluj International Airport said: “Access to European funds by Cluj International Airport has been a success, the facilities offered to passengers are at the highest standards. The Board of Directors and the Executive Management are preparing to relaunch the work from 2021. We invite all the people from Cluj to fly from Cluj Airport, given that the health measures provided are global and the risk for Covid-19 is lower compared to other means of transport”.
